Activist and author, Leonard Zakim was known as a builder of bridges between cultures and communities. Serving the Anti-Defamation League for more than two decades, he became the regional Executive Director at the age of 29. Pope John Paul II honored Zakim for his service to Boston’s Catholics and Jews. Brandeis awarded him an honorary degree of humane letters, and the ABA noted Zakim as a “Human Rights Hero.” After his death from cancer at the age of 46, the city named a new bridge in his honor. The Leonard P. Zakim Bunker Hill Bridge has re-defined the Boston skyline, becoming a new icon for the city.
