Programs for International Students

Applicants with foreign undergraduate degrees

Graduates of undergraduate programs outside the United States may apply to enter New England School of Law's three-year full-time or four-year part-time J.D. program. Successful completion of the J.D. program allows a graduate to sit for any bar examination in the United States.

New England School of Law requires that foreign transcripts be submitted through the LSAC J.D. Credential Assembly Service. If an applicant completed any postsecondary work outside the United States (including its territories) or Canada, he or she must use this service for the evaluation of foreign transcripts. The one exception to this requirement is if the applicant completed the foreign work through a study abroad, consortium, or exchange program sponsored by a United States or Canadian institution and the work is clearly indicated as such on the home campus transcript. This service is included in the LSDAS subscription fee. A Foreign Credential Evaluation will be completed by the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers (AACRAO), which will be incorporated into the LSDAS report.

Foreign applicants must take the LSAT, and if English is not the applicant's first language or if the undergraduate degree was not received from an English-speaking institution, the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) must be taken through the following agency:

  • TOEFL, PO Box 6151, Princeton, NJ 08541, telephone (609) 771-7100, (www.toefl.org ).

The applicant must receive a score of 600 or higher (250 on the computer test or 100 on the Internet test). The applicant must contact the Educational Testing Service (ETS) to request that the TOEFL score be sent to LSAC. LSAC's TOEFL code for the J.D. Credential Assembly Service is 0058. The score will be included in the Foreign Credential document that will be included in the LSDAS law school report.

To use the J.D. CAS, applicants should log in to the LSAC online account and follow the instructions for registering for the service. Applicants should be sure to print out a Transcript Request Form for each institution and to send it promptly to each one. More time is usually required to receive foreign transcripts.

Questions about the J.D. Credential Assembly Service can be directed to LSAC at (215)968-1011 or LSACINFO@LSAC.org .

Applicants with foreign law degrees

If an applicant has a law degree from an institution outside the United States, the applicant may be eligible for advanced placement into a two-year full-time program or a three-year part-time program leading to a J.D. Successful completion of the J.D. program allows a graduate to sit for any bar examination in the United States. To qualify for advanced placement, a student must comply with all of the requirements for foreign undergraduate degrees as listed above and must obtain certification of the foreign law degree by an academic evaluation agency.

LL.M. in Advanced Legal Studies for Foreign Lawyers

The LL.M. in Advanced Legal Studies, explained in further detail at http://www.nesl.edu/intlprogram/llmdetail.cfm, is a program for students with law degrees from institutions outside the United States who want to increase their knowledge of the American legal system.

The application is available at http://www.nesl.edu/intlprogram/llmapp.pdf.

The application, an application fee of $100 (U.S.), all supporting materials must be received by the law school by March 15 of the year a student seeks admission. Applicants whose first language is not English or who did not earn their law degree at an institution where the primary language of instruction is English must receive a score of 600 (250 on the computer test or 100 on the internet test) on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL).

  • TOEFL, PO Box 6151, Princeton, NJ 08541, telephone (609) 771-7100, (www.toefl.org ).

New England School of Law recommends that applicants register with LSAC's LL.M. Credential Assembly Service (http://www.LLM.LSAC.org). For a fee, LSAC will collect, authenticate, and distribute a student's university records and TOEFL score, if required. Applicants must still complete New England School of Law's application and submit all required application fees. The LSAC service serves only to authenticate non-United States or non-Canadian credentials that are needed in addition to a completed admission application.

Applicants must comply with United States immigration laws regarding the study of law and are responsible for obtaining any required visas.
