Dean's Message

Dean John O'Brien

Choosing to become a lawyer is a significant step in your life and one that is not lightly taken. Determining where to attend law school is equally important and constitutes the first decision of your new career.

This Web site is intended to help you with that process. It introduces you to New England School of Law through the words and experiences of some of the law school's faculty, students, and alumni, who describe the strengths of our community, our curriculum, and our location in Boston. You will learn about our history, our approach to teaching and clinical experience, and our three academic centers, which focus on international law, public interest law, and business law. You will read about our courses, our student activities, and the varied options we offer for scheduling your legal education.

New England School of Law is the only independent law school in the Boston area. Because we are not affiliated with a university or other institution, we are able to decide for ourselves how to develop and improve our educational program. Among its other advantages, our independent status has enabled us to maintain the lowest tuition of the Boston area schools.

I am one of New England School of Law's strongest champions. As the school's dean since 1988, that's part of my job. But my dedication has other roots: I am a 1977 graduate of the law school, and in the years during which I worked as an attorney before joining the law school administration, I found that my preparation for practice was second to none. And in recent years, as a member of the American Bar Association Accreditation Committee, of which I have also served as chair, I have traveled around the country evaluating programs at other law schools. There are many fine schools in the legal education community in this nation, but I return home from my trips with the realization that there is no other law school of which I could be more proud to be an alumnus and the dean.

I look forward to welcoming you to New England School of Law.

Dean O'Brien
