Center Institutes

The Center for Business Law includes three institutes that encompass the main areas of teaching and faculty research on business law.

Versteeg Eileen Herlihy

The Intellectual Property Institute

Directed by Professor Russ VerSteeg and Eileen Herlihy

Intellectual property law is one of the fastest growing areas of legal specialization. It is intellectually stimulating, Professor VerSteeg points out, because it combines abstract and practical elements. "At the core of intellectual property law is the concept that, if someone thinks up something either original or novel, that creation ought to have property-like protections," says Professor VerSteeg. "The law draws lines between the intangible and the concrete and between the public domain and private property. These are fields where technology and law intersect -- and often clash -- in novel and dramatic ways."

Eric Lustig Sarah Salter

The Tax Institute

Co-directed by Professors Eric Lustig and Sarah Salter

A strong tax program has been central to New England's business curriculum for many years. "Tax law is a critical component of every aspect of business law," says Professor Lustig. "All business lawyers should be conversant with basic income tax issues, because business decisions routinely incorporate tax concerns. Other areas of practice rely on a knowledge of the effect of tax law and tax policy as well."

Susan Finneran

The Corporate Governance and Ethics Institute

Directed by Professor Susan R. Finneran

Professor Finneran's focus is corporate governance and ethics. She has chaired the Massachusetts Bar Association's Business Law Section Council. "In general, the concepts in business law are intellectually challenging," she says. "But I am particularly interested in examining social justice issues and the responsibilities of companies, both large and small, that have reaped so many benefits from our system."
