Experts in medicine, law, linguistics, sexual violence, child abuse and public policy from around the world have joined with the Judicial Language Project (JLP) in criticizing the New York Times for its characterization of 18 males accused of gang rape, and of the victim, an 11-year-old girl.
The Times’s story, Vicious Assault Shakes Texas Town, was published March 8, 2011, prompting a letter to editor from the JLP on March 17.
Professor Wendy Murphy, JLP co-director, is the lead signatory and author of the letter.
