(Boston, Revised 11/13/09) New England Law | Boston: The Center for Law and Social Responsibility (CLSR) hosedt a LawMatters discussion, Energy Law: Adjudicating on Old Dirties and New Alternatives. Two New England Law alumnae, both former CLSR Fellows in the Environmental Advocacy Project, spoke.
Laura C. Bickel ('03) is a hearing officer for the Massachusetts Department of Public Utilities. Ms. Bickel served as the hearing officer on the NSTAR Green case and is currently serving as hearing officer on a number of Massachusetts Green Communities Act cases.
The first CLSR Fellow, Ms. Bickel worked with the Healthy Public Housing Initiative, a collaboration of scientists, professors, regulators, and activists trying to improve the environment in Boston's public housing, with a special focus the impact on residents' asthma rates. As the only attorney on the team, she familiarized herself with the provisions of the city housing codes and Massachusetts housing laws, and helped set up a training program for residents to educate residents about the hazards of pesticides, mold, and poor air quality.
Sidra Vitale ('07) is currently an associate at Ross & Associates in Boston. As last year's CLSR Fellow, Ms. Vitale served as pro bono counsel with Alternatives for Community and Environment (ACE) in its fight against a proposed power plant south of Boston. She provided litigation support regarding natural resource damages claims for the Massachusetts Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs.
