Study Abroad Programs

Summer Program in Galway Ireland

In 2001, New England School of Law established a summer abroad program at the Irish Centre for Human Rights, National University of Ireland, in Galway. The program, which focuses on the theme of accountability, offers courses in International Criminal Law, the Law of Armed Conflict, International Human Rights Law, International Dispute Resolution, Human Rights Litigation Before U.S. Courts, and Comparative Civil Rights Enforcement. About one quarter of the 60 students enrolled in the Summer 2002 program were from New England School of Law.

Other Programs

Students interested in a semester abroad may intern in the fall or spring of their final year with various international criminal tribunals (ICTY, ICTR, ECCC or ICC) in The Hague and elsewhere. Applications for placements at one of these tribunals for both the Fall 2008 and Spring 2009 semesters must be submitted by January 31st, 2008. Download the externship program handout for 2008-2009.

New England also offers international law summer abroad programs in London and Malta and semester abroad programs in New Zealand and the Netherlands. These are run conjunction with the Consortium for Innovative Legal Education, a cooperative effort of four independent law schools. Additionally, a student exchange program exists between New England and the University of Paris X, underwhich New England students can earn one semester of course credits by studying international and comparative law in Paris.

Internationalization of the Domestic Curriculum

In 1999, the New England School of Law faculty approved an innovative stipend program designed by the Director of the Center to "internationalize" the school's domestic curriculum. As a result, fourteen members of the faculty have added international law components to their domestic law courses to ensure that students are exposed to international law issues in required and highly recommended courses throughout the curriculum. Domestic law courses with international components include Civil Procedure, Constitutional Law, Contracts, Criminal Law, Ethics, Business Associations, Property, Torts, and Tax. New England School of Law's unique approach was profiled in the March 2000 issue of The National Jurist under the headline: "The Innovators -- Students at Select Pace-Setting Schools are Getting an Edge from Creative Approaches -- and Law Schools are Finding that Breaking the Mold can Yield Great Results."
