Afghanistan Projects on Torture and Women's Rights

This project completed in 2006, was undertaken at the request of Amnesty International. It focuses on two human rights issues in Afghanistan — torture and women's rights. The main task of the torture component is to analyze the Afghan penal code for compliance with the UN Convention Against Torture, to which Afghanistan is a party, and to examine the legal competence of the Afghan judiciary to prosecute cases of torture committed by foreign soldiers operating in the territory. The women's rights component focuses on the issue of violence against women. The Center's primary task is to analyze the Afghan penal code with a view to making recommendations on amendments that would enable the Afghan justice system to better prevent and respond to acts of violence against women.
