  • Traveled to Nairobi to train the Kenya National Human Rights Commission in relevant international legal frameworks to assist in the documentation and analysis of the recent violence there.

December 2007

  • Participated in an ASIL panel discussion entitled, "Interstate Complicity in the Context of Human Rights Violations," at the Sixth Session of the UN Human Rights Council at the Palais de Nations, Geneva, Switzerland.

November 2007

  • Participated in a panel discussion at the Boston Bar Association on "Complicity in Torture." gave a guest lecture at the London School of Economics on "Recent Developments in the Application of Human Rights & Humanitarian Law by US Courts in the Context of Guantanamo Bay Litigation."
  • Spoke at the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda on "The Jurisprudential Contributions of the ICTR in Defining the Contextual Elements of Crimes Against Humanity," as part of the Tribunal's Conference on the Legacy of International Criminal Courts & Tribunals.

October 2007

  • Travelled to Suzhou, Chain as a delegate to the inaugural conference of the International Association of Law Schools.
  • Presented a guest lecture at Fundan University School of Law (Shanghai, China) on the evolution of the position of the individual in the international legal system.
  • Spoke at International Law Weekend (New York, New York) on the legal standards governing international responsibility for complicity in the context of human rights violations.

September 2007

  • Represented the American Society of International Law in meetings with the directors of the five Nordic national human rights institutions.
  • Participated in a meeting of International Humanitarian Law (IHL) experts convened by the International Committee of the Red Cross and American University Washington College of Law to discuss the teaching of IHL in US law schools.
  • Participated a meeting of experts in International Human Rights Law to advise the American Bar Association Rule of Law Initiative in the development of the ICCPR Implementation Index.

August 2007

  • Travelled to Cambodia to provide training in international criminal law to the Office of the Co-Prosecutors of the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia.
  • Presented Guest Lecture at Pannasastra University (Phnom Penh, Cambodia) on recent developments in the 'War on Terror' litigation in US courts.
  • Presented Guest Lecture to Malaysian Bar Council (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia) on
    the domestic implementation of human rights standards.

April-May

  • Served as a Fulbright Professor in Peace & Conflict Studies – Interdisciplinary Graduate Program at the Tokyo University of Foreign Studies, Tokyo, Japan . Taught intensive course on the application of human rights, humanitarian and international criminal law in the context of peacekeeping operations.

March

  • Represented the American Society of International Law (ASIL) at the United Nations' Human Rights Committee session in New York City, documented the meeting along with two NESL students.  Met with several UN officials regarding CILP's ongoing projects.
  • Chaired ASIL panel discussion in Washington D.C. entitled "Reforming International Human Rights Systems – A Comparative Analysis," at the 101st Annual Meeting of the American Society of International Law.  Panelists included Fatsah Ouguergouz, Cecilia Medina, Ngonlardje Mbaidjol, and Christos Rozakis.

  • Presented Guest Lecture at Suffolk University School of Law, entitled "Reconstructing the Rule of Law in Post-Conflict Afghanistan: Women's Access to Justice."

  • Presented Guest Lecture at Reykjavik University in Reykjavik, Iceland entitled "The Interplay Between International Law & US Law in the Military Commissions Act of 2006."
  • Presented Guest Lecture at the Fletcher School of Law & Diplomacy, Tufts University entitled "The Evolution of International Criminal Justice Mechanisms."
  • Chaired a panel discussion of the Associated of American Law Schools Annual Meeting in Washington D.C., entitled "The Relationship Between the United States and the International Human Rights Systems."
  • Presented an on-line lecture for ASIL on Careers in International Law .
  • Presented lecture to the Boston Bar Association entitled "The International Legal Framework Applicable to Guantanamo Bay Detainees."

October

  • Presented Guest Lecture at the University for Peace in San Jose, Costa Rica, entitled "Recent Legal Developments in the Application of Humanitarian Law to the ‘War on Terror.'"

  • Met with officials from the Special Court in Sierra Leone to discuss the provision of legal research assistance.

July-August

  • Served as a Visiting Professional in the Chambers of the International Criminal Court in the Hague, providing legal advice on the situations in Uganda and the Central African Republic.

  • Presented Guest Lecture at the Institute of Social Studies in the Hague, Netherlands, entitled "Disentangling the Conceptual Frameworks of Human Rights, Humanitarian, and International Criminal Law."

  • Presented a paper entitled "A Human Right of Self-Defense?" at a symposium at George Mason University School of Law
  • Presented a Guest Lecture at the Amnesty International Conference hosted by Boston University entitled "The Legacy of Nuremberg."

  • Traveled to Washington D.C. to conduct research for project on U.S. attitudes towards International Criminal Courts, research included interviewing various U.S. government officials on the topic.

  • Presented Guest Lecture, "The Security Council and the ICC," in the Summer Course on the International Criminal Court at the Irish Centre for Human Rights in Galway, Ireland.
  • Traveled to London and met with Amnesty International's Japan researcher at Amnesty's London headquarters to advise on reparations for World War II "comfort women."

June-July

  • Served as a Visiting Professor at the Irish Center for Human Right, National University of Ireland in Galway, taught a course on International Criminal Law in cooperation with New England School of Law.

  • Attended the Meeting of the Expert Group on US Attitudes Toward International Courts convened by NYU School of Law's  Project on International Courts and Tribunals, at the Asser Institute, the Hague.  Presented research on the US Attitudes Towards International Criminal Courts.

May-June

  • Served at Guest Professor at the National University of Laos in Vientiane, Laos.  Taught master classes in international law, with an emphasis on the law of treaties, for Lao university faculty and mid-level government officials from various ministries.  Advised law school administration on the development of international law curriculum.

  • Presented an International Training Court at the Danish Institute for Human Rights in Copenhagen, Denmark entitled "The Development of Humanitarian and International Criminal Law.
  • Presented Guest Lecture at the Raoul Wallenberg Institute in Lund Sweden entitled "The Extraterritorial Application of Human Rights Law."

  • Traveled to New York to conduct research on U.S. attitudes towards International Criminal Courts, met with various UN and NGO officials.

2004

August – December

  • Awarded Fulbright Scholarship at the Danish Institute for Human Rights in Copenhagen, Demark.  Researched the development of legal responsibility frameworks for peace operations, taught in the Institute's training course, presented research at the Institute, and guest lectured at the University of Copenhagen. Guest Lecture entitled "The Law of State Responsibility on the Context of Multilateral Operations."

  • Presented Guest Lecture at the Amnesty International Secretariat in London Entitled "The Application of Human Rights and Humanitarian Law to Coalition Troops in Afghanistan."

  • Presented Guest Lecture at the Danish Institute for Human Rights on "The Development of Legal Responsibility Frameworks for Post-Conflict Territories under UN Administration."

September

  • Served as a Mission Delegate on behalf of Amnesty International – International Secretariat, provided legal advice on issues of forced marriage and giving of girls as compensation for killing or financial debt, researched treatment of detainees by Coalition forces and interviewed various justice sector officials.
  • Conducted a training session for the staff of the Afghan Independent Human Rights Commission and the Human Rights Unit of the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan, entitled "The International Legal Framework of Post-Taliban Afghanistan."

June

  • Presented an International humanitarian law training seminar for Amnesty International U.S. Program Directors entitled "The Application of International Humanitarian Law in the Context of the ‘War of Terror.'"

May-August

  • Served at Visiting Scholar after receipt of fellowship with the Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law in Heidelberg, Germany. Researched the nature of international criminal jurisdiction and the tension between the international right to freedom of expression and international obligation to suppress certain types of expression.
