The Immigration Law Project

The Immigration Law Project takes on pro bono work related to human rights, international law, refugees and immigrants. Its director, Professor Dina Haynes, mentors student volunteers in experiential learning opportunities.

Immigration Project Amicus Brief Success

The Attorney General vacated and remanded Matter of A-T-, an asylum case in which the Immigration Project, Directed by Professor Haynes and researched by six student volunteers, had filed an amicus brief, available here, requesting reversal of the decision. In this rare instance, the Attorney General agreed with the Immigration Project amicus position that the lower courts had erred in denying asylum to a Malian woman who had already been subjected to female genital mutilation.

Mukasey: BIA Must Reconsider FGM Decision
"Mukasey ... overrul[ed] the [Board of Immigration Appeal's] decision to deny asylum to the unidentified woman who opposes tribal customs in Mali that force genital mutilation upon its women. The appeals panel had spurned the Mali woman's request in April, in part because her genitals already have been mutilated. Mukasey called the decision flawed and sent it back to the judges to reconsider." AP, Sept. 22, 2008.
