Before joining the faculty at New England Law | Boston, Professor Coulthard served as director of academic achievement at Oklahoma City University School of Law and also taught at the University of Missouri at Kansas City School of Law. He primarily teaches third-year law students how to pass the bar exam. Professor Coulthard also teaches in New England Law's Academic Excellence Program.

Professor Coulthard also teaches for BarBri, a national company specializing in multistate bar exam preparation (he previously taught for KaplanPMBR), and for the ABA’s Council on Legal Education Opportunity (“CLEO”). His research interests include bar exam test-taking skills and strategies, legal writing, agricultural law, environmental law, international law, and tax and fiscal policy.

He has practiced before the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals, the Federal District Courts of Colorado and Kansas, the Kansas and Missouri Courts of Appeals and Supreme Courts, and numerous other state district and circuit courts. Before attending law school, Professor Coulthard served as a United States Army Infantry Officer in Europe and the Middle East.
