Federal Work Study Program
Federal Work Study is a federally subsidized program that provide opportunities to students for on-campus or off-campus legally related employment. Off-campus employment may include non-profit and for-profit organizations. FWS allows students to work in law-related positions at a low cost to their employers. Non-profit employers are required to contribute only 33% of the student's gross earnings while for-profit employers contribute 58%. The remainder of the student's earnings are funded by the Federal Government. Deadlines and procedures are slightly different from summer to academic year work study; please refer to the appropriate heading for more information.

Summer Work Study
Students obtain summer work study positions independently. If you would like to work at a firm, organization or school, simply contact them and ask if they would like a work-study student to work for their office. Many organizations in the Boston area are familiar with this program and some may have a separate application for you to complete. Regardless of the possibility of a separate application process, be sure to complete the NESL application on time. Summer work study applications are found in the returning student financial aid application packet.
Public Interest Law Association
PILA is an on-campus organization that provides funding for students working in public interest law. PILA grants are awarded to students applying for Summer Federal Work Study. Please contact the Financial Aid Office for more information about this grant.

Common Questions with Work Study
Reporting Your Hours:
- If you can not bring in your timesheet on the due date or think the timesheet will not be received in the mail on time, you can call/email your hours; however, we will still need to receive the original timesheet in order to release your paycheck.
- Do not report hours prior to the end of a pay period, if you will still be working during that pay period. This includes calling in during the last day of a pay period, before your work day has ended.
- Students cannot work more than 8 hours in a day and no more than 20 hrs/week (no more than 10 hrs/week for 1Ls) during the academic year; no more than 40 hrs/ week during the summer (this includes those working more than one work study job). If you work 6 or more hours in a day, you must take a half hour unpaid break, which must be noted on your timesheet. If we do not see a half hour break indicated, we will reduce your hours.
- Please report your hours in increments, down to the quarter hour.
- If you call in and are working multiple jobs, please specify which job you are calling in hours for.
- Do not combine pay periods or jobs on the same timesheet; we will need a separate timesheet for each of your jobs (signed by your employer) and for each pay period. Please follow the schedule pay period dates. The complete work study schedule is available online at: www.nesl.edu/finaid/fwsp.cfm
- Students are not paid for holidays, unless you worked on those days.
- We will not accept timesheets that are not signed by your employer. It is your responsibility to submit completed timesheets; if you cannot have your timesheet signed in time to be reported, you may call your hours in to ensure that a paycheck will be generated for you.
Receiving your paycheck:
- If you would like your paycheck mailed to you, indicate so on the top of your timesheet, along with the correct address.
- We will not send or give out paychecks until we have received the signed timesheet for the corresponding pay period.
- Paychecks will not be released until noon on the pay date.
- If you cannot pick up your paycheck, you can call or email us to let us know you'd like it mailed or you can send us an email authorizing another person to pick up your paycheck.
