The Honorable Niki Tsongas, United States Representative for the Fifth Congressional District of Massachusetts, will speak at the law school’s Law Day Banquet and Barrister’s Ball on Friday, April 11.

Congresswoman Tsongas serves on the House Armed Services Committee and the Budget Committee; she is the first woman from Massachusetts elected to the U.S. Congress in 25 years and the first female Democrat elected to Congress from the state in 35 years.

Before her election to Congress, Congresswoman Tsongas was Dean of External Affairs at Middlesex Community College, the largest community college in the Commonwealth. In 2001, she was appointed by then-Congressman Marty Meehan to head a foundation to provide educational funding for the children of victims of the 9/11 tragedy. She is a founder of Lowell’s first all-female law practice.

In 1958, President Eisenhower proclaimed the first Law Day a “day of national dedication to the principle of government under law.” New England School of Law has celebrated Law Day with events and speakers since 1970. Past Law Day speakers have included United States Supreme Court Justices Harry Blackmun, Anthony M. Kennedy, and Antonin Scalia; United States Attorney General Janet Reno; United States Senator John F. Kerry; and Dr. Hans Blix.
