Reference and Research:

If you are studying or writing a paper in a specific area of the law, our legal topics pages, or our subscription databases, are a good place to begin your research. These pages link to websites, research guides, and resources that have been evaluated and selected by the Reference Librarians.

If you are looking for aid in bluebooking or more generally in scholarly writing, then the pages on Law Review/Journal Research may help.

The Librarians are actively involved in research training, and offer advanced or refresher trainings in Westlaw and Lexis for students. Please note that our Westlaw and Lexis contracts limit usage to educational purposes.

The New England Law Librarians staff the Reference Desk for more hours than any other local library, and are available virtually through our Ask Reference service.

Circulation:

If you need assistance finding materials in the library, you can consult PORTIA or ask at the Information Desk for help. We circulate laptops, tape recorders, and dvd players.

ILL:

If the Law Library does not own a resource, the material can be requested from another library through an interlibrary loan. If you would like to suggest a purchase, we will consider it. For details, click here.

Class Materials:

At the beginning of each semester, the library publicizes First Assignments and posts syllabi. We also archive exams from prior semesters, and provide CALI dvd's to students for exam preparation and review.

Career Resources

The Career Resources booklet lists materials held both in the main library and in the Career Services Office, located in the St. James building.

Printing, scanning and copying

Networked printing stations are at a central location on each floor of the library.  To print from a laptop, students need to download a small program from the Technology and Media services site.  Here is a direct link to Student Printing - Print Driver Packets.

At the beginning of the Fall 2010 semester the copicard system changed to a swipe card.  Copicards are used at the copiers located on each floor, and also on the print stations located on the first floor and the basement.

Free for students, we have a wonderful new scanner

free scanner It will save to your usb drive, or email your scanned doc.   The color resolution is excellent.  It will save in Word, PDF, or searchable PDF format, and it walks you through the process with exceptionally clear directions. It will also scan books easily, as it is designed to    let you hang the book over the corner to avoid losing the words at the bendy part in the middle.  Our scanner lives in the basement, on the back wall by the microfiche cabinets, where a Portia machine used to sit.
