Justice Sandra Day O’Connor meets with students

 

New England Law | Boston students were treated to a frank and illuminating conversation with U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor (retired) on November 13, 2012. Justice O’Connor’s warmth and graciousness were in full display, as was the legal acumen that characterizes the trailblazing career of the first woman to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court.
 
Dean John F. O’Brien introduced Justice O’Connor, who was in Boston as the guest of honor for an event that honored the dean for his longstanding service to the American Bar Association, which included his 2011-2012 chairmanship of the Council of the Section of Legal Education and Admissions to the Bar. He remains on the Council as immediate past chair.
 
The video above features Justice O’Connor discussing her current projects, including iCivics, the online civics education program for schoolchildren that she founded in 2009, and O’Connor House, the adobe home in Arizona that she built and that now serves as a forum for civic talk and action. The lively conversation also includes her thoughts on judicial elections, the unique perspective she gained from having served in all three branches of government, and advice for law students (“Study hard, and learn to write persuasively!,” she said, wagging a finger with mock sternness), among other topics.
 
Justice O’Connor previously visited with students and other members of the law school community as guest of honor at the 2008 Centennial Convocation and Celebration, and in 1991, when she came to campus as a sitting justice of the High Court.
