Justice Antonin Scalia's 2008 Visit to New England Law's Summer Program in Galway, Ireland

Justice Scalia co-taught “Separation of Powers” with New England Law | Boston Professor Lawrence Friedman in the 2008 Summer Program on International and Comparative Human Rights Law. The program was offered at the National University in Galway, Ireland, by the Irish Centre for Human Rights and the Consortium for Innovative Legal Education, Inc., of which New England Law | Boston is a founding member.

The course examines some of the principal decisions of the U.S. Supreme Court dealing with the separation of powers, including cases pertaining to appointment and removal of executive officers, delegation of legislative powers, the doctrine of standing, and incursion upon and expansion of the power of the courts. The assigned readings included brief excerpts from The Federalist and from Tocqueville’s Democracy in America. Throughout the course, comparisons were made to the treatment of similar issues in foreign countries, particularly the countries of the European Union.

New England Law | Boston Professor Philip Hamilton was also featured in the summer 2008 program; Professor Hamilton taught “Legal History: The Development of Human Rights Law.”
