Chief Justice Ireland was appointed the chief justice of the SJC in 2010, becoming the thirty-sixth chief justice in the court's history and its first African American chief justice. He had served as associate justice of the SJC since 1997, the first African American justice on that court. Previously he served as judge of the Juvenile Court from 1977 to 1990 and then as associate justice of the Massachusetts Appeals Court from 1990 to 1997.
In 1958, President Eisenhower proclaimed the first Law Day a “day of national dedication to the principle of government under law.” New England Law | Boston has celebrated Law Day with events and speakers since 1970. Past Law Day speakers have included U.S. Supreme Court Justices Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Antonin Scalia, Anthony M. Kennedy, Sandra Day O'Connor, and Harry Blackmun; United States Attorney General Janet Reno; federal Court of Appeals Judge and Solicitor General Kenneth W. Starr; Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court Chief Justice Margaret H. Marshall; Chief United Nations Weapons Inspector Dr. Hans Blix; and Massachusetts Senator Scott Brown.
