CHEAP AND QUICK MEALS

Sweetwater Cafe

Go through the MTA building across the street and out into the alley. Sweetwater is on your left in the alley. Typical American Pub food, greasy but filling. Beer. Big screen TV’s, outdoor seating and Trivia on Tuesday nights. LOVES NESL STUDENTS.

Vietnamese Sandwiches

Washington St. near Kneeland, two doors up from McDonalds.  GREAT sandwiches on a huge French roll. Just 2.50!

Viga- Italian Eatery

Corner of Columbus & Arlington (turn left out of NESL, about 3 blocks) Excellent, very fast Italian. Baked dishes (ziti, lasagna) salads, plus usual pizza, calzones. etc. CHEAP (for Boston!).  Open from 11:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

Montien

First block of Kneeland (Stuart St. turns into Kneeland just past Tremont St. at 7/11.)  Best Thai but also known for good sushi.  On the pricier side - order from the appetizer menu and/or “to-go” to save the tip. Portion sizes are pretty good.

Shanghai Cafe

Corner Tremont and Stuart across from 7/11. Really good, fairly standard Chinese. Also order from Appetizers – portions sizes are pretty good (the fried ravioli and fried scallion pancakes are awesome).

Herrerra's

Mexican Pushcart.  Only food court place we’ll send you to… good, cheap and very quick. In the MTA building foodcart. Try the beef quesadillas or taco salad.  Lotta food for not a lotta money.

New York Pizza

Tremont St. (1/2 block up from corner of Stuart).  Good cheap slices – other hot and cold subs. Old time, white tile, greasy spoon charm. Good food, sizable portions, cheap.

Subway

Tremont St. (just before New York Pizza).

California Pizza Kitchen

Directly across from the school.  A little pricier but so convenient!

SNACKS AND MORE

Ben and Jerry's

Behind Legal Seafoods on Park Sq. Need we say more? Check the coupon book that will come in your mailbox – it usually has a 2 for one coupon for B & J. And don’t forget Free Cone Day in April (just in time for exams!)

Cold Stone Creamery

Side entrance to MTA building (Charles St. side, behind Bennigans).  Gourmet, handmade ice cream. VERY expensive but a worthwhile treat if you’ve earned it or need a boost.

Rock Bottom

Corner of Stuart/Tremont. Ballpark Pretzels. Cheezy gooey mess. Very comforting.

7-11

On the corner Stuart/Tremont – junk food as well as fruit, protein bars, slim jims, juices, yogurt and other much much healthier choices !

Viga Italian Eatery

Columbus at Arlington. In addition to great meals, they have small fresh fruit salads, seltzer and soft drinks, rolls and other good snack choices. Or grab a quick slice.

Your 2L, 3L, and 4LE pals recommend:   Save big bucks- pack your lunch!  There's a fridge and plenty of vending machines in the 3rd floor lounge.

AFTER HOURS

McCormick & Schmick's

Park Square (Arlington St.) THE best happy hour menu – 3:30 to 6:30 ONLY. Meal-sized ½ Lb Burgers, Quesadillas, Skewers, Clams Casino and more (with chips and pickle) for just 1.95 !

Rock Bottom Cafe

Corner Stuart and Tremont.  Sign up right away for the “mug club card” free. Loves NESL students. Typical (and good) pub food. Lots of beer choices. Try the “beer o’ the week’

Sweetwater Cafe

(see above, in the alley) – pub food, beer, big screen TVs - NO YANKEE FANS PLEASE! outdoor seating. Known for Tuesday Night Trivia (NESL students rule).

Beantown Pub

Tremont at Park St. station, just above Suffolk Law (phhhttt!)  Big screen TV’s, pool tables. NO YANKEE FAN PLEASE!

Flash!

Columbus Ave. turn left out of NESL, walk 3 ½ blocks or so, Flash! is across from the “Castle” – trendy if slightly pricier “Martini” and cocktail bar. Big comfy leather sofas, bar, open window seating in nice weather.

Rattlesnake Bar & Grill

A bit further afield, Boylston St. near Arlington St. but still very walkable. Trendy hangout. Three floors and a rooftop garden full of food, drink, pool-tables etc.  Food is pub fare.

The Tam

Something different. Very close by on Tremont across from 7/11. “Tradesman” bar – you’ll find more hardhats and toolbelts than tam ‘o shanters and kilts. Classic Boston bar. Good beer. Grab your toothbrush and shake those morning shakes. Opens at 8 a.m.

M.J. O'Connor's

Meanwhile, back at trendy…some outdoor seating in nice weather. “Irish” pub (if you’ve been to Ireland you know that no real Irish pub is this upscale). But good happy hour food and nice, intimate atmosphere even if there’s a big crowd. Lots of beers to choose from.

Fire and Ice

Berkley and St. James St. (a bit longer walk but worth it) home of the Mongolian Buffet. All you can eat ($8.95, $7.95 at lunchtime) – you pick the raw meat/veggies and sauces from the buffet and they grill it for you. Fun and filling. Watering hole for young professionals in surrounding offices. (including some law firms and financial management houses).

Your 2L, 3L, and 4LE pals advise:  Remember, no drinks until your reading is done and your cases are all briefed (yeah…. right!).  Seriously – remember that you will be in pretty close contact with your new colleagues for the next three years, perhaps your entire career. Try not to do anything so stupid you’ll be remembered for it forever.
