Professional Background

Professor Ellen Farwell is a Faculty Fellow at New England Law. Prior to joining New England Law in 2021, she served as Associate General Counsel at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Professor Farwell represented the Institute in the negotiation of regional and international healthcare collaborations, advised on executive compensation, employee benefits, and the organization's nonprofit, tax-exempt status. In addition, she served as counsel to the Ethics Advisory Committee and a number of committees of the Board of Trustees. Before working in-house, Farwell gained experience as an associate at Nutter McClennen & Fish and as an intern at the U.S. Department of Commerce.

Professor Farwell's commitment to mentoring and teaching the  led her to teaching at Brandeis University and Northeastern prior to joining New England Law. In addition to teaching, her background has inspired her to further explore the ways in which federal tax law empowers or limits the accomplishment of charitable goals and the intersection of corporate fiduciary duties and efforts to increase governing board diversity.
