The Federal Work Study Program is a federally funded financial aid program available to US citizens and permanent residents. The goal of the program is to assist students with the cost of their college education by providing a subsidy to employers for part-time student employment. The program is dependent on the student applying for financial aid through the FAFSA and qualifying based on their financial need. FWS comes with rules and regulations for student and employer eligibility. To comply with the law, New England Law | Boston has established guidelines and processes that must be followed by both students and employers.

Many students are confused by the term ‘work-study’ and think that they are eligible for this benefit simply based on the grounds that they are working while studying at college. Federal work-study’ refers specifically to the federally funded financial aid program designed to help students meet their educational costs via subsidized hourly work.

How do students apply for FWS, get hired, and get paid?

1. Students interested in FWS must complete a FAFSA and complete the FWS application form to be considered for a FWS award. The FWS application can be submitted to the Office of Financial Aid (finaid@nesl.edu)

  • Students should be aware that FWS awards can replace an equivalent amount of federal student loan eligibility depending on Cost Of Attendance in the student's financial aid package. Participating in the FWS program allows students to earn money to help pay their education expenses, so it can be an effective way to minimize law school loan debt.

2. Students who have been determined eligible for Federal Work Study and have been awarded FWS in their financial aid package may set up a job with one of the hiring departments.

  • Students may not begin working before receiving a financial aid offer that includes FWS, or before completing the federally required I-9 authorization process.

3. Hiring requests are confirmed by email. Students must complete online employment forms in Workday (W-4, direct deposit, etc.) and visit payroll with their I-9 identification document(s).

4. After this entire process is complete, the student may then begin working and receiving regular work-study pay up to their work-study award maximum.
