Build Your Legal Foundation
During your first year at New England Law | Boston, you’ll develop critical legal analysis skills, build practical experience, and lay the groundwork for a successful law career.
Orientation
Held the week before classes begin, the Introduction to Law Program prepares you for law school and life at New England Law. You’ll dive into presentations and panels on legal study, the profession, and your first class in reading and briefing cases.
With several first‑year professors participating, orientation is your time to meet faculty mentors, build peer connections, and feel confident before your first day of classes.
Courses
In your first two years, you’ll complete foundational courses in Civil Procedure I and II, Constitutional Law, Contracts I and II, Criminal Law, Criminal Procedure I, Evidence, Property I and II, and Torts.
You’ll also take Law and Ethics of Lawyering, Legal Research and Writing I–III, and Responsible Lawyering I and II. These carefully curated courses equip you with the knowledge and skills essential for success in law school and beyond.
Academic Support
The Academic Excellence Program’s (AEP) Responsible Lawyering course trains all first‑year students in core competencies for legal analysis and exam success. Through skill‑building workshops, you’ll master case briefing, legal writing, and effective study strategies.
Sessions on wellness, ethical values, conflict resolution, and early career development help you form a professional identity grounded in inclusive, equitable practices. AEP fosters habits that support lifelong learning and professional excellence.
Start Planning for Your Career
Career Services
Begin career planning early with the Career Services Office. Meet with experienced advisers to develop a personalized strategy, participate in workshops, receive résumé reviews, and complete mock interviews to launch your legal career.
Alumni Career Forum
Attend our annual Alumni Career Forum to connect with graduates in diverse practice areas and nontraditional roles—from consulting to financial advising—who will share insights and help expand your network.

Experiences That Go Beyond the Classroom.
Enhance your legal education with real‑world experiences outside the classroom. From pro bono projects and summer fellowships to international study and clinical programs, you’ll apply your skills to meaningful work and build professional connections.
Pro Bono Opportunities
As a first-year student, you’ll enjoy opportunities to get involved in pro bono projects through our three academic centers and student organizations, offering practical hands-on experience. You’ll serve clients in need, sharpen your skills, and earn formal recognition on your transcript.
Clinics & Externships
Participate in clinics and externships to represent real clients under faculty supervision. Gain hands‑on experience drafting motions, negotiating settlements, and advocating in court, while earning academic credit and professional mentorship.
Summer Fellowship Program
Spend a summer in Galway, Ireland, studying comparative human rights law and accountability for human rights violations at the Irish Centre for Human Rights. Led by U.S. and Irish faculty, the program runs two sessions each June and July.
Judicial Internships
Secure judicial internships in state and federal courts, drafting opinions, researching case law, and preparing memoranda under the guidance of judges and clerks. Cultivate courtroom insights, professional contacts, and practical litigation skills with a closer understanding of what judges expect from attorneys.
Study Abroad
Work alongside practicing attorneys in law firms, corporations, or government agencies after your first year (second year for part‑time students). Receive a $4,500 stipend and make valuable professional connections.
New England Law Review
Join the New England Law Review and shape cutting‑edge legal scholarship, with many articles cited in statutes, federal regulations, and other law review journals. You’ll edit articles, write on emerging issues, and refine your research, writing, and editing skills—expertise prized by employers and academia.
